Camrose Heritage Railway Station Park,
Gardens and Morgan Garden Railway
2023 9 21 rail safety week camrose station (1)
Located within an hour’s drive of Alberta’s capital city of Edmonton, Camrose is a city of 21,000 featuring a history as an important rail distribution centre and junction. In 1990, following its closure, the CNR donated the Camrose station building to the Society. Built in 1911, this structure is aptly described as an “Expanded Third Class station” – the original portion being similar to that of our Meeting Creek station, with additions constructed as traffic increased during the ensuing years.

The Camrose Railway Station Park site officially opened in the spring of 1993. During the mid-1990s, ongoing conservation of the railway station included the acquisition of two historic railway buildings – a watchman’s shelter and a CNoR section bunkhouse. In addition, various maintenance of way equipment including a “hand car”, track motor cars, and a velocipede are now preserved to interpret the story of maintaining the railway.

A key attraction at the Camrose station during the summer is the “Morgan Garden Railway” - a “G-scale” model railway depicting the stations and other historical elements of the CNoR Battle River branch. The garden railway is named in honour of Sgt. Flight Engineer Gwynfryn Morgan, R.C.A.F., and the thousands of other Canadian Airmen killed in action while in the service of their country. It was dedicated on the occasion of the Golden Jubilee of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II in 2002.
